API Pipeline SMS Assessments: Perspectives from an Assessor and an Operator

A Safety Management System (SMS) is a systematic and comprehensive process for managing safety risks that integrates operations and technical systems with financial and human resource management for all activities related to pipeline operations.

To put simply, a safety system is a business-minded approach to safety.

A Safety Management System provides goal setting, planning, and measuring performance in common with all management systems. It discusses organizational safety rather in addition to conventional health and safety concerns.

During this live webinar, Bobby Lu with Southern California Gas (Gas Operator) will discuss their rationale for choosing API’s Pipeline SMS Third Party Assessment program, including their experience with the assessment program and value they have found with its outputs. Attendees will also hear from Scott Collier, a former Vice President from the pipeline industry and now an experienced assessor with the program. Scott will discuss best practices sharing during the assessments and some examples.

Following prepared remarks, the attendees will have an opportunity to participate in a live question, answer, and comments section.
